WEL COME TO UGAR MAHILA MANDAL

The name itself clearly states that it is an Association of the womenfolk of Ugar. It is run by all members with love and dedication. This year this Mahila Mandal is celebrating its’ 75th year – a day to be remembered and cherished by all its members.

Our History

It was started in the 1943 with only 12 members with Mrs. Sumati Padalkar as the Founder President, in a small room, in the factory premises. As of today it has its own building with the entire infrastructure like kitchen, washroom, garden, gym and audio visual facility. Thanks to the support of The Ugar Sugar Works Ltd. which had always been forthcoming in its help. When Ugar happened to be in Bombay Presidency there were no states as of now and all this property was under the jurisdiction of the Rajasaheb of Sangli.

The main aim of this Ugar Mahila Mandal was to bring all the wives of the officers together, to have some social exchanges, to teach sewing and knitting to the friends and less privileged women. And also to arrange programmes for them.

In the year 1941, The Ugar Sugar Works Ltd. was started by Dr. Shantaram Shirgaokar and his nephew Mr. V.S.Shirgaokar in Ugar, a small peaceful village on the banks of the River Krishna. It was the brainchild of Dr. Shantaram Shirgaokar who wanted to use the idea of ‘Lift Irrigation’ to grow more sugarcane in this belt and run a sugar factory successfully. It was indeed a challenging job then. But with God’s grace it was successfully established and managed by Shirgaokar Brothers from Kolhapur and as of today its’ a Public Limited Factory with a crushing capacity of 20,000 tons of sugarcane. Besides sugar factory, also has its IMFL section and generates power upto 52 MW per day capacity and Ethanol production upto 20,000 Ltr. Per day. As of today Power and Fuel the most important resources for the progress of our nation are produced in Ugar. And as of today, Ugar has emerged into a small township with a population of 35,000.

Just like Ugar Sugar Works, our Ugar Mahila Mandal has also blossomed and grown into a big institution with almost 350 members.
